Columbus Police Mounted Patrol Unit

Columbus Police Mounted Patrol UnitDid you know that the Columbus Police Department has a Mounted Patrol Unit?  I was fortunate to get a tour, take some photos and meet some of the officers in training at their barn/stable courtesy of one of my clients who works there.  It was fun and interesting and educational!

The Mounted Patrol is designed specifically for crowd control at various festivals and events throughout Columbus during the year.  Our patrol is also “rented” out to other cities that need help with crowd control.  For more information, see these articles online from This Week News or

On Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for the opportunity to photograph these great people and their horses who serve our city!

It is nice to have a  mounted police department to feel safe but it also reminds me of days of old where they were used to fight crowds who were against the government. The amount of secruity is increasing, so I wonder what the government knows that we do not.

Interesting line of thought Jimmy. The Mounted Patrol is used at festivals like our Red White & Boom July 4th celebration where there are thousands of people downtown and one mounted policeman/woman can take the place of 5 policemen/women on foot.  One drunken rowdy person can spoil things for hundreds of other people, so that's where the mounted unit comes in.  Thanks for your comments!

Roberta, That isn't something that is often seen anymore!  I am glad that the Columbus Police Department is keeping that tradition alive!
