Virtual Traveler Contest - San Diego, CA

Virtual Traveler Contest - San Diego, California

I just read Joni Staples' blog about the virtual traveler contest and decided that I could probably write about several cities featured in Active Rain, but the ones I follow the most are William Johnson in San Diego and John McCormack in Albuquerque, NM.  I've been to both cities, but William's photos of San Diego always intrigued me and called my name.   So when I got the chance to go to San Diego for the Buffini Mastermind Conference last year, I took it, and wow, did I love that city!  So many wonderful sights to see, and some great photo opportunities.  Unfortunately, last year William was not in town to meet with me.  But he was kind enough to give me a list of places to go and take pictures.  I got to a few of them, but not all.

This year, when I went, I decided to hire a photographer to take me out on a photo tour, so I was so booked up that I didnt have time to meet with William.  Maybe next year!

I took a few good photos while in San Diego last year, one of which was the Star of India ship that is on Harbor Drive. I hired a pedi-taxi (that was fun!), and he took me through part of town and then along the Harbor Drive.  I took the photo without a tripod, which is a difficult thing to do at night.

William also said to go to Balboa Park, so I took a bus and did just that.  OMG - so many photo ops there; what a beautiful park.  All of the photos below are from Balboa park (except the top left and top middle).

Then I went to Coronado and walked for miles taking pictures in the park and ending up at the Coronado Hotel which is a beautiful historic hotel.  Below are two photos (top left and top middle) from that excursion.

San Diego

William takes a ton of photos that I've enjoyed, and I'm sure his photos have made many people want to go to San Diego, but he inspired me to get out and enjoy the beauty of his city.  Looking forward to meeting William next time.

Roberta~I was wondering when someone would spotlight my talented friend and localism blogger extraordinaire--William Johnson! It's so odd, because I was thinking about that just TODAY. I must've received that thought wave you sent out...."Look, I'm blogging about William, check it out!"

Man, you gotta be PROUD of that stunning photo along Harbor Drive! At first, I honestly thought William had taken it. He would be SO happy to see his area looking so beautiful at twilight. You did such a great and exhuberant job of telling the world about San Diego, and I'm not surprised that William went that extra mile to tell you about places to visit...that's so like him...what a gem!

Hi Roberta, WOW, I don't know what to say except that you did a superb job with those photos. There is a garage at the Hilton on the Bay. Do take a tripod and go to the top of the parking garage. There is so much to see and if you have a 300 mm, you get some of the most amazing shots. Slow down the speed and do the traffic below and the lights streams will be awesome. You can spend a couple hours there and capture just about everything. Try getting there just before the sun sets and as it disappears the sky color will amaze you. Roberta, thank you so much for all the wonderful compliments and just know I am just stunned with this post. Thank You, thanks you. Sincerely, William

Hi Gayle, Thank you so much for your lovely comments!  It is my pleasure to highlight William -- he takes great photos, writes a great blog and is a very kind virtual friend!  I am proud of the photo of the Star of India -- and I hope my blog gets some business for William and San Diego.

William - you are very welcome!  You did tell me about that garage top photo, and I was going to go there on my last night in town and didnt make it because I was just too tired.  I wish I had done it... So it's on my list of places to hit next year when I come to town for the Mastermind event again.  Many thanks for your kindness... I hope this post helps you in some way!  Feel free to reblog and use in your localism posts.

Joni - thanks for stopping by to check out my post on San Diego for the contest.  If it hadn't been for you, I would not have known about it.  I hired a graphic artist to do my logo on the side of my blog, but the photo is me :-).  Have a great day!
